Is this you?

You’re dedicated to making this world a better place, but the weight of your commitments takes a toll. You often feel overwhelmed and exhausted by everything you have to do but still worry you’re not doing enough.*

You know you need a change in your life, but you’re uncertain about what changes to make, doubtful of your ability to make a change, and scared of how a change might affect the rest of your life. You long for clarity about what’s next and confidence in yourself to take your next steps.

If you feel exhausted, frustrated, bewildered, uncertain, anxious, guilty, self-doubting, or otherwise overwhelmed as you face the challenges of this moment in time, here’s what I want you to know:

You are not alone.

Whatever your unique vocation may be, working to create a better world is hard. You deserve support.

If you are ready to become more effective and experience more ease, take a stand for justice and enjoy your life more, I invite you to join me for my upcoming course: Fundamentals of Radical Discernment.

*This is Emily and Amelia Nagoski’s definition of burnout from their excellent book, Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle.

Before working with Katherine, I felt like I was carrying so much for so many people that I was about to crumble under the weight of the overwhelm. Deep down, I knew I needed to make big changes, but I felt guilty about letting people down. As a result, I experienced mood swings, and I never had time for much of anything that brought me joy.

Working with Katherine, I learned to trust in myself, honor my needs, find my voice, and know that it’s okay to speak my truth. Katherine gave me the support and encouragement I needed to let go of a significant piece of my work, which was the right step at the right time. It is amazing how different I feel now. I’ve lifted a weight from my body, and I now have a physical sense of freedom and openness in my being.

How I Discovered Radical Discernment

When I started my coaching practice over a decade ago, my plan was to teach changemakers how to take better care of themselves and prevent burnout. I’d seen many fellow activists burn out and leave the fight, and it broke my heart.

But I soon discovered that most of my clients weren’t coming to me to learn self-care. Instead, they were already burned out, and they wanted to get clear about what was next in their work lives. Clarity was the word my clients used most frequently to describe what they wanted from our work together. It still is.

And so, I researched, studied, and supported hundreds of clients to take back their lives from overwhelm, get clear about what they need and want from life, and confidently walk toward a life of impact and joy.

Over this time, I’ve discovered one thing that makes all the difference for my clients: the ability to make choices that honor our personal and collective needs. I call this body of work radical discernment.

Although many people think they must choose between caring for others or themselves, radical discernment supports us to increase both our impact and joy. When we pause, turn toward ourselves with warmth and kindness, identify what we need and what our situation needs, and make choices that honor our needs—over and over again—we cultivate the power to nourish our energy and show up in ways that make us proud, even in the most challenging circumstances.

This course offers a deep dive into the core practices that I’ve come to rely on to help my clients overcome overwhelm, cultivate clarity, and confidently create lives of impact and joy. I hope you will join us.

I’ve done a lot of therapy with a lot of different people, but what makes this work different is that it’s task-oriented. I put what I learn into practice. I take the steps each week, and I’m accountable to following through. I had no idea that we’d go as deep into work as we have, and each thing I learn uncovers a deeper, exciting layer of discovery.

Katherine taught me how to lay out my thoughts and ask the questions that allow me to hear my own thoughts clearly. Now, I’m able to say “no” to the small stuff, stop the interruptions, set my priorities, and stay on the right path.

The Three Basic Moves of
Radical Discernment

First Move: Tuning In

To make choices that honor our needs, we must pause, turn toward ourselves with warmth and kindness, and discern what we need and long for.

The challenge is, most of us are taught from an early age to forsake our own needs, desires, and longings and to perceive ourselves and the world in ways that don’t serve us. This conditioning leads us to show up in less-than-effective ways.

But we can cultivate the ability to lovingly turn toward ourselves, put aside the harmful narratives, tune into our bodies’ subtle intuition, and decipher what we truly need. When we do this, it becomes easier to focus on what matters most, respond effectively to our challenges, and nourish our energy for the long haul.

Second Move: Reaching Out

Once we pause, turn toward ourselves with love and kindness, and discern what we need, the second move of radical discernment is to reach out to others: listening for what others need, learning what has worked for other people facing similar challenges, identifying the support we need, and making clear and compassionate requests.

Unfortunately, the dominant culture teaches us to neglect our relationships, avoid asking for help, and communicate our needs in less-than-helpful ways. But we can learn a new way.

The strength of our relationships is the most significant factor contributing to healing, well-being, efficacy, and joy. When we learn to reach out effectively, we become far more likely to meet our needs and make the contributions we long to make.

Third Move: Crossing Through Gates

On the path toward creating a life of purpose and joy, we come to many gates—moments of decision at which we must let go of something that’s been important to us in order to say yes to what’s calling us next.

Although most of us focus our attention on the big gates—changing jobs, starting a business, getting a promotion, moving home, having a baby—the reality is that we live life at the little gates, the little choices at which we decide whether or not to speak up, sit down to write, go to bed, take a walk, raise our hand, and so forth.

To make skillful decisions that honor our personal and collective needs, we must learn to recognize when we’re facing a gate, soothe our inner Voice of Doubt, and courageously choose the next steps that honor our needs.

Before reaching out to Katherine. I was stuck in perfectionism and fear of failure, and my loud inner judge was often in the driver’s seat. I longed to figure out what was true for me and develop the ability to trust myself and show up boldly.

Working with Katherine, I discovered I have the power to choose—what I do, how I do it, and how I feel about myself and about my circumstances. I developed the courage to put myself out there and try things that I wouldn’t have tried in the past because I was afraid of disappointing myself.

I am now so much kinder to myself, and I comfort myself when I feel discomfort. I trust that I have the practices I need to support my vision for a long time to come.

The Fundamentals of Radical Discernment will help you cultivate the skills to find clarity now and keep getting clear long into the future.

By the end of the eight weeks, you will have increased competency in the fundamental skills of radical discernment:

  •   Noticing and savoring the goodness in your life
  •   Pausing when you’re reacting in ways that may not serve you
  •   Soothing your nervous system when you feel triggered
  •   Offering yourself warmth, kindness, and love
  •   Tuning in to your body’s subtle intuition
  •   Understanding what you truly need
  •   Identifying the limiting stories you tell yourself and choosing a perspective that serves you more
  •   Articulating and aligning your life with your core values
  •   Listening for what your situation needs and what other people need
  •   Discerning your role in helping to meet the needs of your loved ones or community
  •   Asking for help with clarity and compassion
  •   Taking courageous steps toward what’s calling you now

I was a high-achieving workaholic with a very successful career and a young son and needed to figure out how to find some balance in my life.

Not only have I achieved more work-life balance than ever, but I also gained the courage and self-confidence to let go of things that held me back from being my full self. I learned to listen to my intuition, quiet the inner critic, set healthy boundaries, and am creating space for what I’m most excited about—a budding new entrepreneurial career and a life aligned with my truest self.

What’s Included in the Course Exactly?

Eight Live Classes on Zoom

Each 90-minute class will consist of guided reflection, brief lecture, practices to help you embody the teachings, question and answer time, and support for practice between sessions.

Reading Materials for Each Module

In addition to the live classes, each week, you will receive reading for each module, highlighting the key principles from each module and guiding you step-by-step through each practice.

That way, you’ll have support remembering the steps between classes and revisiting them even after the course is complete.

MP3 Downloads & Transcripts

My team and I will share a video recording, audio recording, and written transcript within two business days of each call. (Heads up, we use an automated transcript service, so the transcripts will be unedited.)

That way, you get to engage at your own pace, and you can still participate even if you cannot attend the course live.

Written Check-Ins Between Classes

Each week between our sessions, by Monday at midnight, you’ll fill in an online form reflecting on your celebrations, challenges, and questions that week.

These check-ins will help you stay accountable to reflecting, integrate much more of what you’re learning, and receive support from me.

Written Answers to Your Questions Between Classes

After receiving your Monday check-ins, I sit with your questions on Tuesdays and answer as many as possible. I also select questions to answer on the live calls (as long as the person who asked the questions attends the call).

All participants will receive my written answers on a Q&A Google doc that I share with all participants (with names removed for confidentiality).

Are you longing for more personalized accountability and support?

If so, I recommend checking out the Changemakers’ Mentorship program, beginning June 8. There are four spots total in this small-cohort program, and the price of Fundamentals of Radical Discernment is included.

I used to feel that I had to work harder to make things happen, but Katherine showed me that being present, pausing, taking a step back, and observing— rather than reflexively “doing” something— was transformational.

Learning to slow down and respond rather than react automatically allowed me to avoid panic during a crisis moment and choose the best path at each point along the journey. My work with Katherine gave me the space to imagine and trust that there could be something different that would be even better, as opposed to just slogging down the same trail pulling the weight behind me forever. And it was true!

My free time is now truly mine, and I am exploring areas of interest that bring me great joy and spending more time with friends and family.

As I set goals for myself over the last few years, the word “freedom” kept coming up. My goal was freedom, and now I have more freedom than I’ve ever had. My goal was to have ease, and I have more ease than ever before.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will I need to do to get the most out of this class?

To get the most out of this class, you’ll need to do three things in addition to attending class:

  1. Devote about fifteen minutes daily to engaging with the practices.
  2. Read one to three chapters per week before our sessions.
  3. Attend the class sessions live or attend them remotely.

Building new habits requires an initial input of energy. It’s normal to feel reluctant about investing this energy, especially when you’re overwhelmed or burned out.

And yet, devoting this time will help you take back your life from overwhelm, get clearer about what’s next, and develop skills you can rely on to continue finding clarity and confidence long into the future.

Is this class a safe space for people of color and people with other marginalized identities?

I am committed to doing my best to create as safe a space as possible for all participants.

To do so, I’m committed to the following:

  • Consistently developing my skills as a facilitator with an anti-racist and anti-oppression lens;
  • Dismantling my internalized biases as a white, cisgender, middle-class, currently able-bodied facilitator;
  • Structuring the group in a way that helps all participants feel supported; and
  • Centering group agreements that support participants to hold themselves and each other accountable for minimizing harm and maximizing comradery—with grace and compassion;

At the same time, given that we’re swimming together in the waters of imperialist white supremacist capitalist patriarchy (ty bell hooks), I humbly recognize that I cannot guarantee a safe space for any participant, especially given my multiple proximities to power.

Therefore, I am committed to maintaining open lines of feedback and working with all of my clients—particularly Black, Indigenous, people of color, trans, and disabled participants—to make my courses feel as safe and supportive as possible.

What are your refund, cancellation, and payment plan policies?

Cancellations & Refunds: You may cancel the program prior to the program start date, and we will refund your money in full. We will not offer refunds after this date.

Custom/extended payment plans: Due to the administrative work it would take, we cannot offer payment plans other than what you see on this page.

I’m just not sure.

Well, if you were my coaching client, I’d encourage you to do the following:

  • Check in with your body: In your mind’s eye, I invite you to imagine participating in the course. How does the idea feel in your body—good and exciting? Good but scary/exhilarating? Those are good signs.
  • Explore the cost: With nearly every choice, we must let go of something to say yes to another. Ask yourself: What is the cost of doing the course? What is the cost of not doing the course? Which is greater?
  • Turn toward your Voice of Doubt with love and kindness. Our Voice of Doubt is the part that says Yeah, but… and What if… when we get closer to making a decision. Do your best to turn toward your Voice of Doubt with love and kindness and ask what it needs. Then, get curious: How might you move forward in a way that meets your many needs?
  • Reflect: What are your intentions for the next phase of your life? Does doing the course feel well aligned with your intentions, or not? What does your inner knowing say?

If your inner knowing says no or maybe, honor that.

And if your inner knowing says yes, I invite you to sign up. I would be thrilled to share the course with you.

I’m having technical trouble signing up.

We can help! Email info@callingsandcourage.com, and we’ll get you all set up.

In a society that socializes women to feel like they are never good enough, Katherine challenged me to take pride and find joy without constantly comparing myself to others.

She helped me to discover a greater sense of self-worth and awe for myself, which was a huge shift for me.

How Solidarity Pricing Works

You pay what you can.

Solidarity Pricing is my way of making the course affordable to all who want to participate. Money will not be a barrier to participation.

Here’s how it works:

First, decide if you’ll join us. Let yourself imagine the possibilities of what the course might mean to you. If your body says yes, I invite you to trust that.

Second, if you decide “yes,” then decide how much feels right to you.
Take time to think about the reality of your financial situation and sense into what number feels right to you.

Below are some guidelines for choosing how much to pay:

Solidarity.
$350

Sustain.
$275

Support.
$200

Reparations.
$75

  • $350 is the Solidarity Rate. You might consider paying this amount if you belong to the managerial or owning classes (read this document to learn more). This helps balance the cost of folks who cannot pay the sustainable rate and helps me make my work accessible to more people.

  • $275 is the Sustaining Rate. This amount meets my needs and allows me to comfortably bring these teachings to more people without worrying about making ends meet.

  • $200 is the Support Rate. You might pay this rate if you’d struggle to pay the Sustain Rate; have moderate debt; and support children, elders, or other dependents.

  • $75 is the Reparations Rate. Please pay this rate if paying more would be a financial burden and any of the following apply to you:
    • Are Black, Indigenous, Latine, Asian (AAPI), a person of color
    • Are trans or nonbinary
    • Are Poor or Working-Poor (read this document to learn more)
    • Have a hard time finding work due to immigration status, carceral experience, or disability

I wholeheartedly trust you to choose which payment works for you, and I look forward to welcoming you!

The Accountability

Money-Back Guarantee

Here’s my promise:

If you participate in each class session, set up each tool, and implement them for a month, and you’re not satisfied for ANY reason, just let me know, and I’ll refund your money.

I call this the accountability guarantee because most of my clients long for more accountability when they come to me.

The accountability here is that you must tell me you’ve done the work. (You don’t need to prove you’ve done the work by sending a snapshot because your to-do list and schedule are private, and I trust you to be honest with me.)

Just send a quick email to support@callingsandcourage.com, let us know that you’ve done the work but are still not satisfied, and we’ll refund your payment.

No questions asked.

Your time is precious.

If you think maybe one of my programs is what you need but you’re not quite sure, please ask. I don’t want an unasked question or unexpressed concern to keep you from getting clear.

Please use the form below to ask your questions, and I’ll get back to you within two business days.

Questions? I welcome them!

Anything that comes up for you, just ask.
