Yes, I am offering this course on a “pay from the heart” basis. I’ll explain more about why and how further down, but the bottom line is this:

You choose your price.

If you’re like most of my clients, you’ve done a ton of work on yourself to set better boundaries. Yet you still struggle to figure out how.

This might be why:

1.  First off, the word boundary isn’t the most helpful.

Like many words in the English language, the word boundary is rooted in colonialism and separation culture. We need new language that expresses what we truly want, that helps us both care for ourselves and nurture our collective wellbeing.

2.  Second, rigid, pre-determined boundaries are not the best tool for navigating the complex, unpredictable demands of life.

Yes, we need to assert clear no’s, honor our needs, and not take on what is not ours (i.e., set boundaries). But rigid boundaries do not allow us to nimbly respond to the complexities of life and are therefore hard to maintain.

3.  Boundaries can help us say no to what we don’t want, but they often don’t help us say a wholehearted yes! to what we long for.

Saying yes is far more psychologically motivating than saying no. To create a joy-filled life, we must get good at saying yes.

4.  Boundary is a noun. We need a verb.

This one may seem like semantics, but it’s not. We don’t do nouns, which makes boundaries hard to do. We do verbs. If boundaries are the noun we want, Radical Discernment is the verb that gets us there.

To create lives rich with joy, meaning, and connection, we need the skill and practice of making choices that honor our needs.

I call this practice Radical Discernment.

Most people believe (whether they’re aware of it or not) that caring for others requires us to sacrifice ourselves. But, in reality, the same practices that help us show up more effectively for our people can also help us feel good.

I’ve found radical discernment to be the most important element for setting boundaries, emerging from burnout, and crafting a life of impact and aliveness.

It’s all about integrating these ten core practices into your life:

Over the ten weeks of this course, I’ll guide you through the core practices of Radical Discernment so that you can set better boundaries, heal from / prevent burnout, and bring more joy into your life.

One: The Moment of Choice. Pausing when triggered and shifting from reacting habitually to responding choicefully.

Two: The Compassionate Witness. Embodying the compassionate witness and turning toward yourself with love and kindness

How I Discovered Radical Discernment

I’m an activist first and a coach second.

I first became politicized in high school, learning about US foreign policy in Central America. At first, I fell in love with activism.

But I based my self-worth on how much I accomplished. The work took its toll, and I struggled with chronic anxiety and other health problems. A voice inside begged me to care for myself, but the part that said I wasn’t doing enough won out.

Then, a series of wake-up calls changed everything.

First, my partner was racially profiled and deported back to Mexico. A few months later, I discovered I was eight weeks pregnant. Finally, in January 2008, when I was seven months pregnant, I moved to Oaxaca, Mexico. To be the mother I wanted to be, I needed to care for myself.

I left my high-paced union organizing job, became a yoga teacher and birth doula, and finally moved to Greenfield, Massachusetts (the unceded lands of the Pocumtuc people) in August 2012. In January 2013, I opened my coaching practice.

Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to helping people committed to social change experience greater impact and joy.

Over thousands of hours of helping my clients create better boundaries, reclaim their energy, get clear about what’s next, show up confidently, and truly enjoy their lives, I’ve discovered this:

One:

Getting Oriented & Taking in the Good

The Moment of Choice

To choose, we must pause. When we intentionally integrate pauses throughout our days, we access the ability to stop reacting habitually, start responding consciously, bring our minds to the present moment, and increase our capacity to make decisions that meet our needs.

  • Begin integrating pause for settling your body and choosing consciously throughout your days

Three:

The Compassionate Witness

Dominant culture socialized most of us to reject ourselves, our feelings, and our needs. But when we turn away from our inner experience, it becomes harder to know what we need, and it often makes us feel worse.

When we learn to embody the compassionate witness and turn toward ourselves with love and kindness, we soothe our fear, accompany our pain, and become far more equipped to offer ourselves what we need.

In this module, you’ll learn:

  • Why embodying the compassionate witness can be so transformative
  • 3 simple yet potent practices for turning toward yourself with love and kindness
  • How to shift from self-judgment into self-love.

Four:

The Compass

Most of us have been socialized to ignore our feelings and our needs. But this makes it nearly impossible to hear what our bodies are communicating or understand what we need and want.

To make choices that honor our needs, we must tune into the wisdom of our bodies and discern what we really need. And, we must prioritize taking good care of our bodies (think sleep and exercise!).

In this module, you’ll practice:

  • Tuning into the wisdom of your body
  • Discerning your body’s yes’s, no’s, and maybe’s
  • Identifying what you need and want and distinguishing between the two.
  • Honoring your needs for sleep and movement.

Integration Week:

This week, we’ll take a little extra time to catch your breath, review the work, and integrate what you’re learning.

No additional content, no live call. Spaciousness. And, I’ll offer some guidance on how to spend this week, so it’s not just blank space.

Five:

Your Guiding Principles

When we clearly articulate what matters most to us—our core values, vision, and commitments, they become beacons that shine through the fog of exhaustion and overwhelm and guide us in the direction of what matters most.

In this module, you will articulate:

  • Your Core Values: What matters most to you.
  • Your Next Horizon Vision: All of the puzzle pieces of the life you long for, however far into the future you’re able to imagine.
  • An Embodied Commitment Statement: A solemn declaration of what you’re committed to doing or who you’re committed to being in this next phase of your life.

The clarity you discover in this module will help you cut through uncertainty, more quickly and easily make decisions that serve you, and stay true to yourself.

Six:

Structures & Schedules

The extent to which we honor our needs largely comes down to how we relate to time and structure our days/weeks/months.

We must create—and consistently use—structures that help us relate to time in ways that serve us well. These structures can include practices for:

  • Keeping track of responsibilities (in a calm and clutter-free way),
  • Holding the details and the big picture,
  • Setting priorities,
  • Creating goals that match the time you have (and identifying what doesn’t fit in your schedule),
  • Dedicating time to what matters most (including your physical health), and
  • Staying on track.

Integrating these practices into your lives can help you and your clients reduce overwhelm and increase focus, clarity, and ease.

Seven:

Self-Mediation

Sometimes, when we identify our priority needs, our next steps become clear. Other times, it feels like we’re standing at a crossroads, and we must let something significant go to choose either path.

In this module, I’ll teach you two practices for getting clear when you or your clients are standing at a crossroads:

  1. Self-Mediation: This practice will help you sit beside the parts of yourself that are pulling in opposite directions, listen to their deeper needs, and identify a path forward that meets your needs and feels right to you.
  2. Dialogue with the Voice of Doubt: When your gut knows what to do, but a Voice of Doubt in you screams Yeah but… and What if?, this practice can help you get clear about what the Voice of Doubt really needs and craft a path forward that honors all of your needs.

Eight:

Story-Shifting

Each of us carriesa pack of stories—beliefs, biases, mindsets, judgments, assumptions, and so forth—that we’ve picked up over our lifetimes. Some of these stories serve us, but many hold us back from living our callings and meeting our needs.

In this module, you’ll learn how to begin taking back your freedom from your limiting stories by:

  • Discerning between your stories and what is really happening,
  • Shining light on the stories that no longer serve you, and
  • Choosing stories that serve you more.

Integration Week:

This week, we’ll take a little extra time to catch your breath, review the work, and integrate what you’re learning.

I’ll offer guidance on how to spend this week so that you maintain momentum over the break.

Nine:

Skillful Requests

Once you know what you need, it’s time to speak your truth to others.

But many of us have been socialized to people please, put others’ needs above our own, and say yes when we want to say no. To honor our needs, we must learn to say no and to make requests with clarity and compassion.

In this module, you will:

  • Discern what support you want from others.
  • Create a plan for reaching out for support.
  • Learn a proven, four-part template for making skillful requests.
  • Prepare to share your plans with people close to you who wish you’d abandon your plans—in a way that maximizes the chances of receiving their support and deepening your relationship.

Ten Live Calls

The live calls consist of guided practices to help you embody each week’s teachings and lots of opportunities to ask your questions. I am live with you every session.

MP3 Downloads & Transcripts of All Live Classes

Not everyone can make every class. Previous commitments, time zone issues, sicknesses, appointments. People have lives! My team and I will share a video recording, audio recording, and written transcript within two business days of each call. (Heads up, we use an automated transcript service, so the transcripts will be unedited.) That way, you get to engage at your own speed. You can always make classes up, and there is no such thing as falling behind.

Teaching Materials Beyond the Live Classes

In addition to the live sessions, each week on Thursday, you’ll receive articles that prepare you for the next week’s live session and deepen and expand upon what you’ll learn in class.

Weekly Written Check-Ins

Each week by Tuesday at midnight, you’ll fill in an online form reflecting on takeaways, challenges, and questions related to the curriculum. With so many participants engaging and asking questions throughout this course, it will likely be impossible to answer everyone’s questions during the live calls. And yet, answering your questions is very important to me. That’s why I sit with your questions on Wednesdays after receiving your check-ins on Tuesdays. I’ll bring together similar questions and answer them collectively and answer as many unique questions as possible. I also select questions from the check-ins to answer in the live calls (as long as the person who asked the questions is present on the call with me). All participants will receive my written answers on a Q&A page (with names removed for confidentiality).

It’s far less effective to think about boundaries. Instead, we must embody our boundaries. In this bonus class, I’ll teach you a handful of somatic (body-based) practices that you can start practicing immediately to help you say no to what you don’t want, yes to what you do, and feel strong standing on your own two feet.

What I mean by “Pay from the Heart.”

Simply put, “Pay from the Heart” means that you check in with your heart and choose a payment that works for you.

I want you to feel good about our relationship—what you receive as a course participant and what you give in exchange.

I trust you to find a number that feels good, no less and no more.

What is sustainable for us.

To be in right relationship with you, I also need to be honest about my needs. (Otherwise, I would not be a great model for making choices that honor our needs!)

The reality is that at less than $95, I risk not covering my needs. And so, I decided, from the heart, to set the minimum contribution at $95 dollars.

If you have the means to pay more, $225 is my preferred, comfortable price. This amount meets my needs well and allows me to comfortably work to bring these teachings to more people without worrying about making ends meet.

And, food and shelter: If you are in a financial situation where spending $95 dollars puts you at risk of not being able to afford food or shelter, please choose an amount lower than $95. If this is your situation, I am serious about welcoming you.

Otherwise, I ask you to pay at least the minimum of $95, and I welcome you to consider paying more if you can.

What other people charge.

I’ve researched lots of similar offers, and most fall between $225 and $1250. If you have the means to do so, I welcome you to consider paying more than $95. This helps balance the cost of folks who cannot pay the minimum, and it supports me to invest more energy in making my work accessible to more people.

The gift here is that whatever amount feels right in your heart works great for me, truly. I trust that.

Who is this class for?

This class is for you if you are an:

  • Activist fighting to dismantle systems of oppression and bring forth a better future for your community;

Is this class a safe space?

I am committed to doing my best to create as safe a space as possible for all participants.

To do so, I’m committed to:

  • Consistently developing my skills as a facilitator with an anti-racist and anti-oppressive lens;
  • Dismantling my internalized biases as a white, cisgender, able-bodied facilitator;
  • Structuring the group in a way that helps all participants feel supported; and
  • Centering group agreements that support participants to hold themselves and each other accountable for minimizing harm and maximizing comradery—with grace and compassion;

At the same time, given that we’re swimming together in the waters of imperialist white supremacist capitalist patriarchy (ty bell hooks), I must humbly recognize that I cannot guarantee a safe space for any participant, especially given my multiple proximities to power.

I am therefore committed to maintaining open lines of feedback and working together with participants—particularly Black, Indigenous, people of color, trans, and disabled participants—to make the group feel as safe and supportive as possible.

How much time is required each week?

It really depends on the person. If you devote the minimum time to 1) attending calls, 2) reading the material, and 3) doing some of the practices, it’ll probably take about three hours each week.

Sometimes folks choose to go particularly deep, which takes more time. Others will have less time to go deep.

What matters most is that you consciously choose how much time you dedicate, whether more or less.

Don’t pressure yourself to do more than you can. You can download everything and keep working with the material long after the class is over.

How long do I have access to course materials?

I’ll provide you with multiple ways to download and save all materials. Then, when the program ends, I’ll provide you with a link to all the course materials in one easy-to-access location that is yours forever.

Are you concerned that participants won’t value the course or take it seriously at “pay from the heart” pricing?

This is a question I’ve heard a lot. To respond, let’s start with two definitions of value:

  1. The earliest meaning of the word value (from c. 1300) is “price equal to the intrinsic worth of a thing.”
  2. When I use the word value, and when I hear most social-justice-minded folks use the word, we’re using a definition closer to this: “that which we hold most dear, our core needs and guiding principles.”

These are quite different definitions.

Because capitalism has trained us to equate price with the intrinsic worth of a thing, pay-from-the-heart pricing might lead some people to see this course as less being “valuable” or engaging less. Sure, that’s possible.

But I don’t believe it will be the case for most people.

Moreover, making this program more expensive (and thus less accessible to poor and working-class folks) to encourage people to sign up or engage with the content feels disrespectful and condescending.

I reject the notion that I’d need to demand any particular price for you to take the course seriously. I respect you and trust you to make that decision yourself.

I view prices as reflections of many factors, including our core values—that which matters most to us.

I decided to make this course Pay from the Heart in order to reflect my values, particularly my value of accessibility. Healing and personal transformation support should not be a privilege of the elite.

Well, if you were my coaching client, I’d encourage you to do the following:

  • Check in with your body: In your mind’s eye, I invite you to imagine joining this course. How does the idea feel in your body — good and exciting? Good but scary/exhilarating? Those are good signs.
  • Explore the cost: With nearly every choice we make, we must let go of something to say yes to another. Ask yourself: What is the cost of joining? What is the cost of not joining? Which is greater?
  • Turn toward your Voice of Doubt with love and kindness. Our Voice of Doubt is the part that says Yeah, but… and What if… when we get closer to making a big decision. Do your best to turn toward your Voice of Doubt with love and kindness and ask what it needs. Then, get curious: How might you move forward in a way that meets your many needs?
  • Reflect: What are your intentions for the coming year? Does this feel well aligned, or not? What does your inner knowing say?

If your inner knowing says no or maybe, listen closely. And if your inner knowing says yes, I invite you to gather the courage and sign up. I would love to get to support you in this way.

Cancellations and Special Payments Requests policy

I’ve poured my heart into this program to make it as comprehensive and inexpensive as possible. I’ve seen other programs charge high prices for similar content, and yet I feel great about offering this at Pay from the Heart pricing.

At the same time, requests for seemingly simple things, like special payment plans or other custom arrangements, can quickly eat up hours of administrative time.

To minimize investment in administrative work, here are the policies I’ve chosen:

Custom/Extended Payment Plans: We cannot offer any payment plans other than what you see on this page because of the administrative time required.

Refunds & Cancellations: You can cancel the program before the first day of the program and my team and I will refund your money in full.

If you choose two payments, we can stop your second payment if you want to leave the program before that second payment is charged. But we need at least 2 business days’ notice (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm Eastern) before the charge is processed.

We will not refund any payments charged after October 27, 2022.
