This is what I believe: you are perfect.

I believe that radical self-care is not self-improvement, self-growth, or self-change. It is about being true to who you are. It is about embracing the fact that there is nothing wrong with you. It is about loving yourself.

Loving yourself is transformative. It transforms the way you perceive yourself and your world, the way you feel, and the way you act. But it does not change who you are.

When Michelangelo was asked how he carved his majestic sculpture David, he responded, “I did not carve David. I removed that which was not of David.” He saw David in the stone and simply let him emerge. And so it is with radical self-care. As you take away that which is not you by transforming self-disparaging beliefs and saying no to what no longer belongs in your life, you create space for your core brilliance to shine. You create space to experience the perfection of who you truly are. You create space to love yourself for exactly who you are.

This is what I believe: our bodies are animated by an inconceivable Life force that is responsible for the millions of physiological processes happening in our bodies every moment of every day.

I am not responsible for keeping my heart pumping, my fingernails growing, my lungs breathing. Life is coursing through my veins. I am Life. This is the same Life that inspires you to breathe, plants to grow, the sun to rise and set. Life is manifesting itself in every moment, everywhere. The power of Life created you and animates you in every moment. Without it, you would cease to exist.

According to the Toltec story of creation—the one that works for me—once upon a time, very long ago, there was a creator. You can call this force whatever works for you—God, Allah, the Great Mystery, Universe, Love, Life. The Toltec call this energy the nagual, or the light.

Once upon a time the nagual manifested itself as creation, as all that is. I don’t know if this was a conscious decision like in Genesis or a big bang like the scientists tell us. I just know that there was one energy—Life—and it manifested into the physical, material reality of all that is. The Toltec call physical matter the tonal. The nagual and the tonal are two sides of the same coin. There is only one life force, and it unites everything.

I believe that you are a unique manifestation of life.

You are filled with the magical life force that animates all of creation. As my teacher, Allan Hardman writes, “You are mostly space, filled with life. Most of what you are is life animating you, moving through you, not the specks of matter it animates. YOU are the power that is life.”

If you are a perfect manifestation of life, and life is divine, then how could there possibly be anything wrong with you? The truth is that nothing is wrong with you. You are absolutely perfect, exactly as you are and exactly as you are not. You don’t have to do anything to earn the badge of perfection or to earn love. You are love.

When you give yourself the freedom to love yourself the divinity that you are can shine out into the world. Just as I believe that you are a unique manifestation of the divine, I also believe that you were born with unique gifts to share with the world. The ONLY way to share your unique gifts is to develop absolute, unconditional love for yourself and the truth that arises within you. When you are fully yourself, you are able to share yourself fully with the people you care about and with the world.

The call to radical self-care comes when you realize that it would be easier to be true to yourself and the truth that arises within you than to keep trying to be someone you are not. Loving yourself is where the path begins.
